The most visible data brokers are people-search sites like Spokeo, Whitepages, and BeenVerified, where anyone can search your name and instantly see your home address, phone number, and relatives for as little as $1. But the most dangerous data brokers operate in the background: companies like LexisNexis, Acxiom (which holds profiles on 250 million Americans), and Babel Street sell data to insurance companies, employers, lenders, and even federal law enforcement.

How do data brokers get your information? They pull from public records (voter registration, property deeds, court filings), social media profiles, loyalty programs, online purchases, app usage data, and other data brokers. Most consumers unknowingly consent to data sharing in terms of service agreements they never read.
